Top tips for inspiring leadership culture
Inspiration
Key Learnings
- Invest time and money in your team’s autonomy, confidence and attitude
- Make changes to small, everyday behaviours to instil a leadership culture
- Use external trainers if necessary but make sure the behaviour is implemented long term
Everyone in your business should be able to be a leader, says Laura Bouttell, managing director at Quarterdeck.
For most ‘bosses’ the idea of being able to go on holiday without the need to check in is the stuff of dreams. But this is the Holy Grail of leadership. Leadership means creating a team that is inspired by you, not dependent upon you, a team that can keep itself motivated and on track in your absence.
In order to do this, however, we need to invest in our team. Not just financially but in terms of their autonomy, their confidence, their attitude but most importantly your time.
Most leaders think they haven’t got the time but that just isn’t true. All it needs is small behaviours every day, behaviours that instil a leadership culture, behaviours that mean everyone is a leader, not just the boss.
This is, however, easier said than done. Habits are very hard to change and if, for example, one of your habits is to micromanage then you’re not going to find it a simple task to increase the autonomy of your team.
Some people use external trainers to help and this is a good idea but the behavioural change needs to last long into the future to maintain development and sustain team and business growth.
We run a series of Masterclasses where the business buys the seat but anyone can go along to any session. It creates the feeling of ‘we’re all in this together’, which ensures everyone is swimming in the same direction.
The sessions are designed to be taken back into the workplace and trickled out, so it also supports the idea that everyone in the team is a leader, not just those at the top.
Investing in your team is never a waste of your time, as some leaders think. It will always reap benefits and you’ll remember those while sipping your G&T in the sun.
